A brilliant sunrise at Compris Vineyard in Newberg, Oregon, with fog settling in between the trees and vines, and a view of Mount Jefferson in the distance.

Dear Compris Family and Friends,

With signs of spring showing itself to be just around the corner, we eagerly await its official arrival. The bluebirds are back in the vineyard, buds are popping up on our rose bushes and trees, and the vines in the vineyard are in the process of being pruned. In our continuous effort to improve overall vine health and fruit quality, we've implemented a few new things this year. The first thing we're doing is pruning later than normal to allow more time for the grapes to be on the vines as well as to mitigate potential frost effects.

Something else new that we're doing this year is handling some of the pruning ourselves, specifically the Dick's 95 and 115 clones, and will be utilizing the sap flow pruning method. Sap flow pruning encourages plant health and longevity. Our 115 block yields have been diminished the last couple of years, and the Dick's 95 (our "golden" vines) can use some extra care. It's a slow, thoughtful process - definitely a labor of love. We appreciate Dru and Aaron's time in the vineyard, giving these vines this one-on-one attention.

Spring is always a nice time to get out and about in wine country. The weather is starting to get warmer and the crowds have not yet picked up. Come join us for a wine tasting, see the vines freshly pruned, and soak in these early green spring days with us!

Thank you for your continued support of our team's passion for wine growing.

What's in a song?

This month’s music intro is a special call out to one of our wines being released for the first time, the As One. We feel that this Pinot noir is a true reflection of our vineyard as it encompasses fruit from our volcanic, marine sedimentary, and wind-blown loess soils, all found within our estate. This evokes the essence of Compris - included and understood. As One showcases its terroir, able to be structured and graceful at the same time. Much like the lyric "in the sun I feel as one" by Nirvana on their song "All Apologies", this wine sings to us that "all in all is all we are". Enjoy!

Winemaker for a Day Recap

We had an immersive experience with a fantastic group of people in February during our first "Winemaker for a Day" Blending Experience. Our winemaker, Aaron, guided our guests through tasting individual barrels of Pinot noir sourced from different clones and areas in our vineyard, both of which influence the profile. Aaron explained what he is looking for when tasting each lot, and how and why he determines which of our Pinots that barrel will be considered for the final blend. Everyone tasted along, comparing the differences and identifying their preferences, all while asking great questions and getting to know their fellow table-mates. We can't wait for next year's!

Upcoming Dates to Note

We're excited to share what's on deck for the Compris Crew this year! As more information becomes available, we'll update our website, newsletters, and social media. Hope to see you in the coming months!

Our March Cause ~ Education/Sustainability

Every day the Compris team is learning about and implementing new ways in which we can limit our impact on our planet. By sourcing agricultural products locally and farming responsibly we can help do our part.

Friends of Family Farmers (FoFF) was founded in 2005 by a group of farmers and rural residents. Their foundation was in response to the increased pressure being felt by Oregon’s rural communities by out-of-state large corporate agribusiness entities. FoFF works to promote and protect socially and environmentally responsible family farming, ranching and healthy rural communities in Oregon. They engage in a variety of work under their Farmer, Eater, Next Generation, and Advocacy Programs to support this mission. The Farmer program brings farmers and ranchers together with consumers to address issues facing family-scale agriculture in Oregon. Through their Eater Program, FoFF works to educate Oregonians about the value of local, sustainable agriculture and family-scale farms. The Next Generation program connects new and beginning farmers with landowners, job opportunities and resources. With their Advocacy program, they keep tabs on the influence that corporate agribusiness entities and state and federal agencies have in our state and communicate with the public.

For the month of March, Compris Vineyard will be donating one dollar from every bottle sold or glass pour purchased of our Valley Skies Rosé of Tempranillo.
